All your efforts How you tried To build big nothings In the sky And nothing is as simple dear Our painted light And I could dream a thousand dreams But the sky looks different People kissing in the street Let us be gracious in defeat And I could dream a thousand dreams Our painted lights And nothing is as simple dear When the sky looks different And darlin’ you should know I only had my reasons I didn’t want to go But I knew I couldn’t stay And darlin’ you should know I only had my reasons And darlin’ you should know I only had my reasons And darlin’ you should know I only had my reasons, too

Julie 04:40
Downstairs in the kitchen I was tired and broke So I light a smoke
We wait a long time For the rain to come But it don’t come now
Julie I’m very sorry You’re mother didn’t make it home today Julie Please forgive me I never wanted things to be this way This house Every morning In the pale new light You are waking up
Will all the sadness you can’t bare to leave Bring your heart to us Return your love to us And keep you safe from harm? Julie I’m very sorry You’re mother didn’t make it home today Julie Please forgive me I never wanted things to be this way

A Notebook 03:51
Upon my desk Right, in the rain A list of the grocery shopping On the last page Of my notebook A stain, saffron and coffee The stars begin to cinder The sky begins to fall Meek little stain Covering words May they all be forgotten In my notebook How I have tried To save my thoughts of the day now The stars begin to cinder The sky begins to fall On the last page Withered and frayed The rain Won’t go away Won’t go away now

Sunbeams for you child Under the banyan There is no more no less Under the banyan Beneath the banyan May you be guided By love and truth

Now I was lost In still elation  This broken room where I was fixed Oh lord, I had sworn to start again Love was never ours to keep The breeze was sweet because it passed Through the door, fields of corn and starts again  There’s nothing that you can prove to me Its seems like nothing that I’m looking for Oh lord, I was told to start again Pools of light and the shadows It’s all in your eyes To start again  There’s nothing that you can prove to me Its seems like nothing that I’m looking for Oh lord, I had sworn to start again Now I have come to disappoint you Our dreams are always far too grand I have the shame of the next man who starts again   That night I tore an empty pill skin No conversation, roll the die  Was it light?  I had sworn to start again Always looking for the ceiling Keep hitting it when I get high  Oh lord I had sworn to start again.

Shetland St. 03:16
You started burying your clothes In a panicked daze
I tried to talk about anything else
Oh what I difference it made I was hoping to leave now anyway Early November on shetland st In a tiny house beside the train On a dirty mattress holding court again I walk outside again And taken by the sight on the lawn In movements sweet and meaningless We watched you as you slipped away You slipped away
It was your choice for you to make You slipped away But how I wish you could have stayed You slipped away
It was your choice for you to make You slipped away But how I wish you could have stayed

Third EP from Meanjin/Naarm songwriters Milk Buttons

Released by Airlock Records

From Cam

I produced and recorded most of this work in my studio during the biggest waves of the Covid pandemic in QLD. Jackson would record material, and send it to me to work on. Starting with the basic ingredients of lyrics, melodies and harmony, I would flesh out the arrangements as needed. Each piece lent itself easily to multiple treatments, but you could say the aesthetic we landed on bought me great comfort. We discussed it a bit, how we might make this work more acoustic (in contrast to our last EP Daffodil which was heavier in it’s scope) but it felt very natural. This music asked me to go back to basics, relying almost entirely on acoustic instruments and the voice. It was a wonderful tonic to my hyper-digitalised online work life at the time. For me, the songs blend my interest in the more traditional aspects of songwriting with my jazz and improvised music leanings. Working with improvising musicians (Ben Shannon, drums and Lachlan Kidd, bass clarinet) opened up the forms and textures. The music ‘floats’ in places; still tied to pulse, but it’s loose and sometimes obscured.
